County Legislature Passes Resolution Proposed by Legislators Meyers and Michel To Support the Nation of Haiti
New City, NY (January 20, 2010) – At its full Legislature meeting of January 19, 2010, the Rockland County Legislature unanimously passed, in modified form, the resolution originally proposed by Legislators Joseph Meyers and Jacques Michel to express deep regret regarding the devastation and suffering caused by the January 12th earthquake to the nation of Haiti. The resolution also communicates support for the rapid and coordinated rescue and relief efforts mobilized by the United States government, state governments and municipalities and rescue and relief organizations throughout the country.
After the vote, Legislator Michel, who is of Haitian decent and who has relatives directly affected by the disaster said “I thank our Rockland County neighbors and friends, and also the generosity of the American people, for their extended hand to the people of Haiti who are suffering greatly as a result of this devastating earthquake. Indeed God is saying, “I will not leave you nor forsake you.” Our prayers continue to be with those that are affected.
Legislator Meyers was pleased that the resolution included a strong statement urging all Rocklanders who are financially able to please assist in the relief effort.
“As former Presidents Clinton and Bush have repeatedly stated, the urgent need now is for money to be sent to responsible relief organizations so that urgent medical and life-sustaining needs can be met in the immediate aftermath of this tragedy”, said Legislator Meyers.
The entire Legislature joined in sponsoring the resolution as a show of solidarity on this issue.
